CEO/Founder
Desmond Levene

Desmond Levene, the visionary behind Black Fan Publishing, has dedicated over two decades to crafting captivating stories. Born in Westmoreland, Jamaica, on July 14, 1957, he is the youngest of four boys and the elder brother to two sisters. Raised in humble beginnings, his family relocated to Kingston City in pursuit of better opportunities. However, the harsh realities of societal challenges, exacerbated by overpopulation, cast a somber shadow over their lives.

Tragedy struck when they lost Phillip, affectionately known as "Mama wash belly," to a crime that left an enduring ache. Desmond's mother, Lunette, took charge, defying male dominance, and orchestrated a plan to lead the family to a new world. She sent his older brother Charles to Toronto, Canada, where he found refuge with their father’s side of the family. Meanwhile, Desmond remained with their father, while his sisters, Anita and Hortense, went to live with Aunt Lyn in Saint Catherine.

During his rebellious teenage years, Desmond found himself incarcerated and part of a gang. Yet, it was during this tumultuous period that he began questioning life’s purpose. In the 1990s, a visit to New York City sparked a profound realization. The moon seemed to converse with him, and he contemplated the sun from its deepest shadows. These moments shaped his perspective on humanity and life’s meaning. Later, at York University, he delved into Greek and Biblical traditions, seeking answers.

Now, having published two works of fiction—"The Other Side Rastaman Vibrations" and "Hurricane Gilbert: A Jamaican Saga"—Desmond aspires to leave his mark on the annals of literature, standing the test of time.

Assistant Publisher:

Black Fan Publishing

From my current vantage point, I find myself deeply involved in the creative world. My name is Melaine  Levene, and I have supported my husband, Desmond Lloyd Levene, because I believe in him and his vision.

My journey began in Norwalk, Connecticut, where I first gained experience in the restaurant business and later transitioned to home care for the elderly. Over time, I honed my mother’s knack for meticulous household and business management, tracking every penny and making wise investments. This skill set proved invaluable as I partnered with my husband.

His newfound discipline in writing became evident as he worked tirelessly on his screenplay, 'The Other Side of Frances.' Recognizing his storytelling prowess, especially for film, I joined forces with him. Now, as an executive producer and assistant publisher in his self-designed publishing house, I contribute to the world of art and prose. Supporting Desmond has been a fulfilling journey, allowing me to combine my business acumen with a passion for creative storytelling.

In my role as an executive producer, I ensure that each project not only stays true to Desmond's vision but also meets the highest standards of quality and artistic expression. Together, Desmond and I have created a synergistic partnership that blends our unique strengths and shared aspirations. Our collaborative efforts have culminated in projects that inspire, entertain, and provoke thought, reflecting our commitment to making a meaningful impact through the arts.
